In 2018, I turned a side project into a €5k MRR business in just 4 months. Social Optim was an Instagram growth service that helped 150+ clients grow their accounts through automation and engagement strategies. The key was ruthless productization and a referral program designed to make customers into my own salespeople.

From Personal Project to Business Need

It started with my own Instagram accounts. I was experimenting with growth techniques (automated posting, strategic engagement, content curation) and seeing strong results. Friends noticed. Then friends of friends. People started asking if I could do the same for their accounts.

At first, I helped a few people for free or for small fees. But the demand kept growing. I realized I had two choices: keep it as a favor-based side thing, or build a real business around it.

The Challenge: Selling a Service at Scale

The manual approach did not scale. Each new client meant more of my time: setting up their account, configuring their strategy, monitoring their growth, answering their questions. If I wanted to grow beyond a handful of clients, I needed to remove myself from the equation as much as possible.

The Solution: Building a Productized Service

I built a website to handle inbound interest and explain the service. I created a customer portal for onboarding and account management. I set up Stripe for automated recurring billing. Most importantly, I designed standardized processes that could be executed consistently across all clients.

The goal was to remove 90% of manual actions. Every hour I spent building systems was an hour I would not have to repeat for each new client.

My logic: a customer who comes through a referral already trusts the service because their friend recommended it. They convert faster, complain less, and stick around longer. That higher LTV easily covers the commission cost.

I added another incentive: refer 3 paying customers, and your subscription becomes free. This created a clear, achievable goal for customers who wanted to reduce their costs.

The result was that customers became my sales team. They had real financial incentive to recommend the service, and they could speak authentically about their results.

Instagram Growth Methodology

The service itself was built on growth tactics that were effective at the time:

  • High-volume posting: Up to 6 posts per day with automated content sourcing
  • Quality content curation: Systems to source and schedule high-performing content
  • Community engagement: Automated follows, comments, and strategic tagging
  • Compounding techniques: Multiple growth methods working together

These tactics are less effective today due to platform changes, but the underlying principles of consistency, quality, and engagement remain relevant.

Results: Scaling to 150+ Clients

Within 4 months, I hit €5k MRR. The business eventually peaked at around €60k ARR with 150+ active clients. Across all managed accounts, we generated over 3 million followers.

The referral program alone drove over €3.5k in revenue. More importantly, those referred customers had better retention than customers from other channels.

The business ran with minimal daily involvement from me. The systems I built handled onboarding, billing, and most customer communication. I spent my time improving the service and handling edge cases rather than doing repetitive tasks.
